Teenagers & The Health Centre

There may be times when a teenager wants to see a doctor or a nurse on their own without their parents. You do not need to be 16 to do this.

If the doctor feels that you are mature enough to make decisions about your own health and understand the pros and cons of any medication, you can do this on your own. You are, of course, welcome to bring your parents or a friend at any time.

Confidentiality

Any discussion or consultation you have with a doctor or nurse is completely confidential. They may feel that it would be sensible to involve a parent or guardian and would talk to you about this. However, this is your decision. The doctor will not even discuss with your parents that fact that you have been to the surgery unless you ask the doctor to do so. This duty of confidentiality applies to all staff at the health centre.
